Adam Glapiński
Governor, Narodowy Bank Polski
Born on 9 April 1950 in Warsaw.
In 1972, he graduated from the Central School of Planning and Statistics (currently, SGH Warsaw School of Economics) and since 1974 he has worked there as a lecturer. He is Professor of Economics and head of the Political Economy and History of Economic Thought Unit at the Collegium of Management and Finance at SGH Warsaw School of Economics. In 2003-2007, he was Professor at the Edward Lipiński School of Economics and Law in Kielce. Previously, he was engaged in teaching activities, inter alia, at the Polish Academy of Sciences (1978-1983), at the Inter-University Centre of Postgraduate Studies in Dubrovnik (1986-1989), at the University of Colorado at Boulder (1993-1998), at the United States Business and Industrial Council at the University of Missouri and University of Kansas (1996) as well as the Institut Superieur de Gestion (1994–2005).
Since the beginning of the 1990s, he has held numerous important posts in public administration. In 1991, he was Minister of Construction and Spatial Planning in the Government led by Jan K. Bielecki. In 1992, he was Minister of Foreign Economic Relations in the Government led by Jan Olszewski. He became a deputy to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of the First Term (1991-1993) and senator of the Senate of the Republic of Poland of the Fourth Term (1997-2001), where he served as Deputy Chairman of the National Economy Committee. He was also a member of the EU-Poland Joint Parliamentary Committee.
He was Chairman of the supervisory boards of Bank Rozwoju Eksportu S.A. (1992), Centralwings Nowy Przewoźnik (2007), KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. (2007), and President of the Board of Directors and General Director of Polkomtel S.A. (2007-2008).
In 1993-2001, he was director of the Institute of Economic and Political Freedom.
In 2009, he served as economic advisor to President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński. In 2010-2016, he was a member of the Monetary Policy Council, and since 2016 he has been a member of the Management Board of Narodowy Bank Polski.
On 10 June 2016, he was appointed as Governor of Narodowy Bank Polski, and he took office on 21 June 2016. On 12 May 2022, he was appointed for a second term of office, which started on 22 June 2022.
He is a holder of numerous awards bestowed on him for his achievements as Governor of Narodowy Bank Polski by Polish and international media, including, “Gazeta Bankowa”, “Parkiet”, “Polska Press”, “Capital Finance International”, as well as the “Economic Award of the President of the Republic of Poland” and the “Special Award” bestowed under the “Economic Award of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship”.
In 2020, Mr Glapiński ranked 6th in the ranking of the 200 most influential people in the Polish economy of RMF FM, Money.pl and 300Gospodarka. In 2021, he ranked 1st in the ranking of the 50 most influential people in the Polish economy in 2020 of “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”.
